Movie: The Italian Job (1969)

Posted by BenSpark on January 28, 2008

Today Allison and I watched The Italian Job. This was the 1969 original version. I liked the remake much better. This movie was very strange. Not much on plot and there were some confusing parts. The best part of this movie was the minis tearing around Italy.

Apparently Michael Caine's character was in prison. There was also a criminal mastermind called Bridger who was also in prison. And everyone in prison sings and wears suits. So weird. Then after the team gets the gold they tear off into the mountains in a bus. As the bus went around corners each mini was tossed out and down the cliffs. So why was it that after all the minis were tossed out the gold was at the back of the bus? I guess it was there so that the smiling terrible driver could put the bus off the road and then land precariously teetering over the edge of a cliff. The the movie just ends.

Benny Hill was also in this movie as a computer genius and a letch. This was the first time I had ever heard him speak.

Psych: Lights, Camera… Homicidio

Posted by BenSpark on January 26, 2008

Shawn Spencer on the set of a Spanish Soap Opera equals funny. One of the funniest parts of the episode was when Shawn & his father were watching soaps. Henry tells Shawn that Chips is fake. Shawn asks if there is anything else his dad wants to ruin for him.

Shawn ends up a regular on the soap and high school Spanish kicks in. It made me think of the Spanish oral reports I used to do with my friends Scott and Andy. Basically it was all Spanglish.

What I did like was that there were subtitles. Spanish Soaps need subtitles in real life. I always want to watch them and figure out what is going on but I only know basic Spanish.

The episode is being played again at 11:35 on Telemundo in Spanish. Very Cool.

This post was sent via my cell phone. I get 1000 character with a photo or video message but only 140 from a text message to an e-mail address. So I wanted to test it for blogging at the airport and other places where Wi-Fi was unavailable. The photo is of Psych on TV, I blogged this while watching.

Double Chuck

Posted by BenSpark on January 25, 2008

So NBC had a couple new episodes of Chuck on last night. Why would they choose to air both on one night. That seems ludicrous to me while we are in the middle of a writer’s strike and there are not many new shows on. It would have made more sense to play one show one week and the next on the next week. But I am not an ad exec. And they moved Chuck to Thursday for this. We totally missed the begining of the 1st episode.

That being said, I am very glad that Chuck is back on the air, or was for one night. The cast even did little spots in between the show. I like everything about this show, the cast, the dialog the chemistry. It all gels for me.

In the course of the two episodes. They kind of ran together for me, we see that Casey had loved someone in the past. She was however a spy for the French. In the end of that episode they made up and she left his life (forever, I’m not sure).

In the second episode we see Captain Awesome propose to Ellie. This was a big deal as he entrusted his grandmother’s ring to Chuck for safekeeping. However the Buy More was robbed, of every single thing including the ring.

The subplot for each episode was about Chuck’s status as the intersect. The new one is up and in beta however Chuck does not know that. We were led to believe that Casey was going to “take care of” Chuck. However it does not look like that is the case. Chuck will actually be put into lock down away from family and friends and they can never know. It will happen so fast that Chuck will have no time to pick out any luggage for his journey.

I don’t know if there are any more episodes of Chuck left for the season, seems like NBC ate all of their Halloween Candy in one night. Bad move.

Beach Front Avenue!!

Posted by BenSpark on January 23, 2008

You know that you are a child of the 80’s when someone says A1A and you shout out “Beach Front Avenue”. And if you don’t know all the words to Ice Ice Baby you are not 80s.

Lyrics…

Ice ice baby, ice ice baby
All right stop, collaborate and listen
Ice is back with my brand new invention
Something grabs a hold of me tightly
Then I flow like a harpoon daily and nightly
Will it ever stop? yo — I dont know
Turn off the lights and Ill glow
To the extreme I rock a mic like a vandal
Light up a stage and wax a chump like a candle.

Dance, bum rush the speaker that booms
Im killing your brain like a poisonous mushroom
Deadly, when I play a dope melody
Anything less than the best is a felony
Love it or leave it, you better gain way
You better hit bulls eye, the kid dont play
If there was a problem, yo, Ill solve it
Check out the hook while my dj revolves it

Ice ice baby vanilla, ice ice baby vanilla
Ice ice baby vanilla, ice ice baby vanilla

Now that the party is jumping
With the bass kicked in, the vegas are pumpin
Quick to the point, to the point no faking
Im cooking mcs like a pound of bacon
Burning them if theyre not quick and nimble
I go crazy when I hear a cymbal
And a hi hat with a souped up tempo
Im on a roll and its time to go solo
Rollin in my 5.0
With my ragtop down so my hair can blow
The girlies on standby, waving just to say hi
Did you stop? no — I just drove by
Kept on pursuing to the next stop
I busted a left and Im heading to the next block
That block was dead

Yo — so I continued to a1a beachfront ave.
Girls were hot wearing less than bikinis
Rockman lovers driving lamborghinis
Jealous cause Im out geting mine
Shay with a gauge and vanilla with a nine
Reading for the chumps on the wall
The chumps acting ill because theyre so full of eight balls
Gunshots ranged out like a bell
I grabbed my nine — all I heard were shells
Falling on the concrete real fast
Jumped in my car, slammed on the gas
Bumper to bumper the avenues packed
Im trying to get away before the jackers jack
Police on the scene, you know what I mean
They passed me up, confronted all the dope fiends
If there was a problem, you, Ill solve it
Check out the hook while my dj revolves it

Ice ice baby vanilla, ice ice baby vanilla
Ice ice baby vanilla, ice ice baby vanilla

Take heed, cause Im a lyrical poet
Miamis on the scene just in case you didnt know it
My town, that created all the bass sound
Enough to shake and kick holes in the ground
cause my styles like a chemical spill
Feasible rhymes that you can vision and feel
Conducted and formed, this is a hell of a concept
We make it hype and you want to step with this
Shay plays on the fade, slice like a ninja
Cut like a razor blade so fast, other djs say, damn
If my rhyme was a drug, Id sell it by the gram
Keep my composure when its time to get loose
Magnetized by the mic while I kick my juice
If there was a problem, yo — Ill solve it!
Check out the hook while deshay revolves it.

Ice ice baby vanilla, ice ice baby vanilla
Ice ice baby vanilla, ice ice baby vanilla

Yo man — lets get out of here! word to your mother!

Ice ice baby too cold, ice ice baby too cold too cold
Ice ice baby too cold too cold, ice ice baby too cold too cold

Rest in Peace Heath

Posted by BenSpark on January 23, 2008

Actor Heath Ledger has died. He was a very good actor. I enjoyed him in many many movies like 10 Things I Hate About You, The Patriot and A Knight’s Tale. A death like this is a tragic one as you could not see it coming. There has been much speculation going on all over the entertainment ‘news’, blogs and papers. I know that people want to make sense of a tragedy of this nature. And many clamor to know more and more about motivations behind what happened. I hope that people allow Heath’s family to mourn him in peace.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles: The Turk

Posted by BenSpark on January 22, 2008

This episode of The Sarah Connor Chronicles is titled: The Turk. It sounds like it was named after a dance move named after Turk on Scrubs. But that was not what The Turk was. The Turk is a supercomputer, home grown by a former Intern of Cyberdyne that worked with Myles Bennett Dyson. I’m not sure if it was the same actor who was in the movie (I think it was a deleted scene on the Special Edition version) who talks with Myles and asks him where the chip came from. The kid had an eager intern-like quality about him.

Adam, this former intern, is a cell phone salesman and has an obsession with creating a super computer which he has nicknamed The Turk. Adam also is smitten with Sarah so he asks her out. Sarah says yes to see if he is a threat. There were some tense moments when Adam showed her The Turk. Sarah is a much more mellow Sarah Connor than Linda Hamilton played in T2 (We watched that on Monday before the show). She is not as quick to kill anyone. Although she was going to kill Myles she did not. How chilling was it to see the terminator hand on the poster holding a chess piece. I though she was gonna kill Adam right then and there.

John and Cameron’s first day of school was an interesting one. Sarah lays out a schematic of the building like a bank they were going to rob or something and gives them detailed information that they need for escape. It was one of those intense drama with humor scenes that made Buffy work so well. I liked John a lot in this episode. He is starting to grow on me (could be that I had just watched Edward Furlong’s performance as a tween with his voice changing and screaming for 2 1/2 hours).

At School John and Cameron must skirt the metal detector issue and John explains that Cameron has a big metal plate in her head. A quick hand wand verifies that. It can also account for why she is such a freak. John has that line of “Don’t be a freak” thrown back at him during a particularly dramatic moment. It is in the relaying what happened in that moment that you see the glimmer of the future leader that he will become.

The opening voiceover was a subtle tie in with T2. I would have missed it had it not been for just watching the movie before this episode. In the home of Myles Dyson Sarah starts to rant on about the scientists that created the atomic bomb. In the show and this voiceover opening we learn that while she was in the mental institution she became obsessed with those scientists and the history surrounding the creation of the atomic bomb.

Cromarti has found a scientist of his own, the one who develops the exo-skin for the terminators. Cromarti shows up in what looks like a bubble jacket and a ski mask. The scientist is not that afraid around Cromati even when you think he’s gonna get killed by Cromarti right off the bat. While there was nothing that would have saved him he should have at least looked a little more like his life was in danger.

Although with the guy dead now, who is going to actually follow his work. How will the other Terminator’s get the exoskin. I swear that if we just let the Terminator’s be they would be their own undoing. The scenes with Cromarti were disgusting, with his new skin being formed and the end with the eyes. That was a throw back to the first Terminator movie when Arnold removes his eye.

The 4th freedom fighter is still running around. I hope we meet this person soon. And in the End Sarah does not kill Adam, but she torches her house to kill The Turk. I am really enjoying this show and I hope that Fox does not kill it before it can gain ground. I think that with the writer’s strike we may have a chance, but I am still not getting my hopes up.

Also a nice touch was Sarah visiting Myles’ grave on the 10 year anniversary of his death, however if she was in 2007 and the events of T2 took place in 1995 then it would be the 12th anniversary of his death. There are many dates to keep straight with this series and if the show is going to do well it has to pay closer attention to such details. And if T2 happened in 1995 then John would have been 10 or 11. He had to be about 13 in T2. The timelines are all messed up. Still, it is an entertaining show.

TV Show: Psych: The Old and the Restless

Posted by BenSpark on January 22, 2008

Psych was a pretty decent episode this past Friday. Gus and Shawn investigate some mysterious illnesses at an old folks home. Their client, Booger from animal house. He is a security guard at this maximum security elderly housing complex. And so it should be, those people in that facility had it all and apparently it was worth killing for.

Shawn and Gus enlist Shawn’s father to infiltrate the elderly community. He has a great time and is a hit with the men and the ladies. He becomes a BMOC right away. Probably because he has two good hips.

There was a separate storyline with Lassiter and O’Hara. We find O’Hara showing up Lassiter more and more and they don’t seem to interact much with Shawn and Gus so far this season. I’m hoping that there will be more between the four of them soon.

Great reference to Val Kilmer and Real Genius (I can see that Shawn takes after that character). And of course having Curtis Armstrong of Revenger of the Nerds in the episode qualifies for an 80’s reference. Oh and the happy dance in the administrator’s office too.

TV Show: Moonlight: The Mortal Cure

Posted by BenSpark on January 22, 2008

Last Friday night Allison and I watched Moonlight. I have to say, this show is getting better. It explores some interesting things int he Vampire Mythos. For one thing Mick seems to be able to walk around anywhere int he sunlight as long as he has a manila folder or his hand to shield his eyes. I’m certainly glad that Dracula didn’t know that trick.

We also learn that Coraline is much older than known and she has some siblings. They are snotty French aristocrat siblings and they are not happy with her. Apparently during the French Revolution the guillotine was invented to kill vampires. And these 7 siblings created a concoction to make them human for a little while. Coraline gives this ti Mick, he takes it and then gets the crap kicked out of him.

Meanwhile Josef, the coolest vampire gets himself a massage from some ladies in leather lingerie. That Josef sure knows how to reduce tension in his undead life.

Oh and Beth was all angsty and pissed at Mick for not making her boyfriend a vampire.

Movie: Terminator

Posted by BenSpark on January 20, 2008

Last night Allison and I watched the 1984 James Cameron movie Terminator. I had not seen it in a while and Allison had never seen it. We watched it because Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles really delves into the history of the Terminator franchise.

It was great to watch this movie and in doing so I saw many elements that have repeated throughout the franchise. The phrase “Come with me if you want to live” was uttered by Kyle Reese then Arnie as T-100 and Cameron in T:SCC. I like to see a common phrase or element ring through a series like this. I had forgotten that Kyle Reese said that to Sarah Connor when he first encounters her.

One thing I realized in watching this movie was that the Terminators brought about their own downfall by trying to come back and kill Sarah Connor. For one thing if the Terminator the T-101 (that is what Reese called it not T100) was sent back to kill Sarah, Reese was sent back to save her and also ended up fathering John Connor. So if the Terminators never went back in time then John Connor would never have been born. This time travel stuff gets very muddy.

I also noticed last night that the psychiatrist at the police station is the same one from T2. I had never noticed that before. And I looked on IMDb and he is also in T3. That is nuts. I will probably have Allison watch T3 at some point because it is on FX every single night now (or it seems) Even though T3 is not cannon. And also there is talk of a T4 to come out.

Watching a movie made in 1984 is fun because the special effects are so ridiculous at parts. For one thing at the end of the movie when the terminator is an exoskeleton and is chasing Reese and Sarah it looks so fake. I can’t even begin to explain how fake but the only thing I can think of to compare it with is Clash of the titans from 1981. Those parts were that bad.

Well, either tonight or tomorrow we watch T2.

Product Placement

Posted by BenSpark on January 20, 2008

In movies and TV shows there are many spots for product placement. It helps defray the cost of production by generating advertising dollars. I’ve seen major sponsors like Coke and Chevy (Transformers anyone?) But what about furniture stores. In every single movie that is not animated there has to be some form of furniture. How do the movie and television companies afford to have so much furniture in their productions?
